Majoritarianism dominates politics in the current conjuncture. It was muted during the regime of the first BJP Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It has become much more visible under Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014. Three shifts have reshaped Indian political-consolidation of a majoritarian brand of politics, decline in the autonomy of institutions and restrictions on dissent. This book deliberates on these changes and their impact on Indian democracy. It discusses how the regime has used political and institutional mechanisms to undercut the pluralist nature of state and society which is essential for the sustenance of a secular and democratic frame in a diverse society.
